Journal #3

It is pretty obvious now in the book that the setting is in the future. On pages 18-21, Mildred had “seashells” in her ears and watched television in which she was able to participate in. Also, there is a mechanical hound in the fire station. The “seashells” in Mildred's ears are headphones. It is humorous that these things were set in the future since we have them today. It is like we are living in the future today. Montag believes the mechanical hound at the fire station was programed by someone who does not like him. The hound snaps and growls at Montag. The author uses very descriptive words when talking about characters and other important parts of the book. On page 33, he describes the firemen as men with “charcoal hair and soot-colored brows and bluish-ash smeared cheeks where they had shaven close; but their heritage showed.” I feel like this describes the “typical fireman” today as well.
