The beginning of the book starts with the main character, Montag, describing his job as a fireman. As a fireman, he burns books, because reading is against the law. Montag met a seventeen year old, named Clarisse McClellan, when walking home. She is strange and extremely observant. Along with many other clues, it is obvious that the book is set in the future. Clarisse makes a comment on page eight saying “Strange. I heard once that a long time ago houses used to burn by accident and they needed firemen to stop the flames.” So far this book seems interesting, because it is about the future, and it could happen in real life. The tone is very mysterious and dark. I find it odd that they met on the road out of all places they could possibly meet.
